The Fishtail palm is a tropical flowering plant with bipinnate leaves. It is a commonly cultivated palm in warm mediterranean, subtropical and tropical climates. The Fishtail palm is also often grown as an interior palm. 

The Fishtail palm is a monoecious palm tree. It will die after flowering and setting seeds.

The Fishtail palm can be either solitary or clustering. The solitary species are Caryota cumingii, Caryota rumphiana, Caryota obtusa and Caryota gigas. The clustering species are Caryota monostachya and Caryota mitis.
